While the Polish pope, John Paul II, was dying, the churches were filled with believers. Wanting to pray for him the pilgrims were gathering together in places connected with the popes visits. They seemed to give us the message that they still believed in God, that they needed to share their religious experiences and finally that they needed religion and the Church.
For priests it was the time of renovation of their fait, of their vocation. The image of the Church of the elderly was broken. But these scenes in Poland we could see only in the period of two, maybe three weeks.
Maybe it was only a fascination with the person of the pope, not with the Catholic religion. However, I think that for believers it was simply an occasion to show their belief. The need for religion in my opinion now is stronger than ever but this is the fashion of easy and consuming life that makes us hide our faith. In this fast going century people and especially the youth feel confused, they try to find an aim in their lives and they usually fail. So they begin to look for something that could support them in their decisions, in their choices, something that could last forever.
God offers them unconditioned love, they do not have to deserve to be listened to, they do not need any titles and degrees. This is a real and comforting alternative to the world in which they have to live.
